Rules for Competitions Leading to the Annual World Salsa Championships And The World Salsa Championships

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this salsa competition is to see which couple or team per division can best interpret the character of salsa music and dance regardless of whatever tricks or moves they do. In other words, it's not the tricks that are important but making them be a part of your routine and what salsa represents. While lifts are only allowed in the cabaret and team divisions and they can be impressive, doing them cleanly is  even more important. Again, if you can't execute properly the tricks don't do them.

GOAL

Albert Torres & The Salsa Seven, Inc producing these Worldwide Competitions, between January And December of each calendar year, are proud that the winners of each division will be eligible to be part of the World's most prestigious, respected and most watched World Salsa Competition.

Our goal is to give the greatest salsa dancers in the world the recognition they have deserved for many years. Our time has come!

This is why some of the judging and criteria may be more strict than usual. Our goal is to take Salsa to places where it has never been.

Hopefully with everyone's participation whether it be competing or attending The Finals in Disney World in Orlando, FL, it will once again be a success. In supporting Salsa events like this, we can keep our music alive and pass it on to future generations. We are truly, "Creating Unity Through Salsa". We have many other projects in which we will educate the rest of the World  unfamiliar with Salsa music and dancing.

We will be conducting workshops for beginners, intermediate and advanced dancers. This event is truly beginner friendly.

Also each evening we will complete the day with everyone dancing to the sounds of the best live Salsa bands and great international DJ's. You will learn about the beauty and history of this music and dance. We will all show the world that Salsa is not color-blind but color rich.

For the songs, we just closed a deal with Fania Records, you just have to go to the Fania Website :

PRELIMINARY ROUNDS
Preliminary warm up rounds for "On 1", "On 2", & Cabaret divisions are 1.5 – 2.0 minutes and competitors will dance to the DJ's pre selected music. Each couple will then perform a routine no longer than two minutes that they have choreographed to their own music or music from our pre selected songs. The routine cannot go over two minutes. We will have a time keeper for each routine. If routine is longer than two minutes the team or couples will be deducted percentage points for each second over two minutes.

The team division will not have a warm up period to DJ music. They will be expected to be prepared to perform a choreographed team routine of two Minutes or less.

All dancers of all divisions are required to bring their own two-minute or less pre-recorded music on a CD format. Only music of one performance is allowed on each CD.

No routine previously performed in past years at the World Salsa Championships will be allowed to be used again, (qualifying, semi-final or finals).

No changing of partners can occur after you have entered the preliminary rounds.

MUSIC & CD
Music must be at least 80% salsa. You are allowed to mix no more than 3 different songs or 3 mixes in one routine. The 20% of your routine that you are allowed to have other music besides salsa can be any music of your choice as long it is on the pre selected song list for the finals.

Reminder: A Maximum Of 3 Songs Per Routine Can Be Mixed Into Your Routine.

We encourage you to prepare more than one choreographed routine for the various qualifying rounds in case you qualify for the finals.

PRE-SELECTED MUSIC
All routines in the finals (teams, couples & exhibitions) need to use music from the pre- selected music that will be available after august on our website. It is each participants responsibility to make sure they are using the correct pre-selected music. This rule is for the finals only. You are free to use any music in your qualifying or semi final round.

IMPORTANT

Prepare at least 2 CDs on different CD brands with the music for each routine. Example: Two routines equal 4 CDs. The CDs should be ready to be played as is. There should only be music for one routine on each CD.

The DJ will not slow down or speed up your CD. Please protect your CD's by having covers for each one. Also please identify your cd by putting your name, name of song, artist name, name of record company and author of song and length of each song on the cd. This is very important.

COSTUMES & DANCE ETIQUETTE
Contestants are encouraged to wear costumes or matching outfits. We strongly suggest that jeans are not used as costumes and that ladies wearing dresses or skirts wear nylons or fishnets.

Suggestion: Gentlemen wear socks with your costumes when wearing long pants.
Contestants will show etiquette during contest by refraining from distracting others while competing couples are performing.

JUDGING GUIDELINES

Dancers will be judged in the following categories: timing, overall technique, difficulty, connection / partnering skills, choreography / originality, appearance / showmanship & heat performance.

Judges will decide their final scores following these guidelines:

You will be also judged by your overall presentation. The judges will be looking at all of the categories in general in which you are being judged on. They will also be watching your confidence on stage.

JUDGING CRITERIA
Choreographed Routines Will Be Judged By The Following Criteria:

Timing 40% - - Was correct rhythm maintained throughout the routine?
Were syncopations deliberate and within the acceptable deviations of timing for the dance? As you can notice by the guidelines, the judges will be looking closely to the timing of the contestants. This criteria alone represents 40% of the overall score. Contestants will be judged from the moment they are on the dance floor whether it be the warm up period or the choreographed routine.

We, the Salsa Seven, Inc have decided with the support of our Head Judge, Billy Fajardo and Katie Marlow our Scrutinizer, not to deduct points if you are dancing "On 1" and return by breaking "On 5". The same if you are dancing on " 2" and return by breaking on "6 ". If you were to return on any other beat than that mentioned you will be deducted points. The Head Judge,   will make this decision depending how many times the infraction occurs in the routine and will determine the amount of points deducted.

Be aware that you may look great and do some great steps and even do moves that the crowd will love, but if your timing is not consistent to your selected division, you will be deducted between 10% - 40% of your score.

Technique 10% - Reflected through balance, placement and line. Partners must reflect adequate "Latin/Salsa Motion" and "Isolations" as designated by the dance style. Movement should appear to be effortless. These are all reflections of good dance technique.

Difficulty 10% - What was the level of the turns utilized? The amount of turns both double and single foot? By both parties or only one? How intricate were the shines? In the cabaret division, what was the difficulty of the lift-work? Was it properly executed? How about jumps, kicks?
Any movements requiring exceptional balance, flexibility or strength? Were all movements attempted successfully executed?

Difficulty can be ranked as follows for On-1 and On-2:
A Level: Basic movement, no single footed turns, no multiple turns, no single leg balance elements, no splits, dips etc…. 0-5.9
B Level: Silver level salsa patterns, double turns, single pirouettes or variations of such, basic syncopations or shine movements, Basic Dips 6.0 – 7.9
C Level: Multiple Touch and Go Spot Turns, Intricate Multi-Level Hand Changes in Patterns, Single Leg Independent Balance Elements, Intricate Syncopations and Movement for Shine Patterns and Choreography, Intricate Dips or Flairs that do not leave the floor 8.0 -10.0.

Difficulty can be ranked as follows for Cabaret:
Same as above, but to also to include the following:
A Level: Simple lifts that are shoulder level and below: 0-5.9

B Level: Overhead single skill lifts without smooth transition into and out of lifts (ie: Overhead Press or Star from a hesitation, jump or run 6.0 – 7.9

C Level: Transitional lifts that show more than 1 skill before lady returns to the floor. Seamless transitions from floor to air and back that reflect Musicality 8.0 – 10.0

Note: Salsa Rhythm must be maintained for transitions from floor to air
and back for all level skills.

Difficulty can be ranked as follows for Team:
All of the above applies but all movement must be synchronized.

Connection / Partnering Skills 10% - How well did the couple work together as a team? Was there an actual Lead/Follow relationship established? How synchronized was the team during side-by-side movement or shines?

Choreography/Originality 10% - How well put together was the performance? Did the routine flow easily from one movement to the next? Was there something clever or new that was part of the routine? Was musical was it?

Appearance and Showmanship 10% - How professional and polished did the team appear to be? Did they project to the audience and capture their attention?

Heat 10% - 10% of the couples score will reflect how they performed in a pure Lead/Follow heated format, ensuring that dancers truly possess knowledge of the dance.

Infractions

Minor balance error should take 1-3 points off technique (each time)
Minor mis-connect should take 1-3 points off connection (each time)
Major fall should take 5 points off of technique (each time)
Major misconnect or if team loses synchronicity for more than 2 8-'s should take 5 points off connection (each time)
All decisions are final and are to be determined by the Scrutinizer and Head Judge.
Disqualifying Infractions
In the "On 1" & "On 2" categories, no move in which both feet leave the ground at the same time will be permitted, including any move above the shoulder will not be allowed. If at any time for either dancer, if both feet leave the ground, points will be deducted. If ANY part of the body of either dancer goes above the partners shoulders, the couple will be disqualified with no refund. Participants will also be disqualified if any portion of their routine in the finals uses unauthorized music

Couple or team will be disqualified if any contestant is under the age of 16 years old on dates of competitions. Each participant will need to bring proof of age upon request. They will also not be allowed to re-enter under this or any other division during this particular qualifying contest. They can enter another qualifying contest in the future by registering and paying the entry fee for that particular event.

Rounds
Each round is considered a "fresh start" for competitors. However, order of performance will be based on the preliminary round score, with the lowest scored competitor performing 1 st and the highest last.

Example:
All participants qualifying for the finals will not be bringing their semi final score to the finals. All participants will start fresh. The best couple or team during the finals will be the winner.

During the finals participants in ALL categories can only use authorized or our pre selected music.

Quarter Final: When necessary

Semi Final: Reduce amount of participants

Final: Final 10 teams or couples in each division to compete in the final round.
